Christian Schubert: I live in Cairo, and since 2018 this store had always stood out as one of the very (!) few interesting bookstores in Cairo. Not anymore. It has become quite boring, the staff seems unprofessional. Asking for the catalogue, for instance, is asking too much! Cannot recommend this place anymore, and I say this as a fan of AUC Press itself!

Jeff Narver: I just went to the Orientalist book shop in Cairo after a trip to the Egyptian Museum. I finally found it and had to push hard to get the door open. I was looking for antiquarian books in English on ancient Egypt and found nothing but a few common hardcovers. The woman didn’t speak English well and was not inclined to help. The book stock was falling apart and I think that they focus on pictures. A true waste of time, avoid avoid avoid.

Georgios Oikonomou: Probably it used to be a nice and interesting place in the 60s. Unfortunately, I have never experienced it during the old days. There is only one employee left, his English is limited, he has no clue what he sells or in which language the books are written. If you are a foreigner expect at least to pay 5 times more than an Egyptian (tried this since I live in Cairo). Sad... Be careful!

Stef Meliss: The cutest little shop to buy beautiful Egyptian made products from independent artists and craftspeople. If khan-al-Khalili is too busy for you, this is the place to go. We had such a nice shopping experience including fresh juice and 1:1 consultation on the origins of all the beautiful pieces, cannot recommend it highly enough!!

Lena Katende: Literally bumped into this hidden gem while looking for a grocery shop on the last day in Cairo. Conveniently close to Tahrir square. Crammed full of high quality artisan products from all over Egypt, you are sure to find some treasures to take home. I did! So, enjoy the Hibiscus welcome drink and happy shopping.

Gorgeous pottery, prints, baskets and textiles with information about the makers - very reasonable prices. Highly recommend!
